Folding filter paper chemistry.

The paper is often crêped to improve porosity. Now fold it again as shown on the right. Most filter papers are made on small paper machines for laboratory filters the machines may be as small as 50 cm width. Obtain a round piece of filter paper.

The raw materials are different paper pulps the pulp may be from softwood hardwood fiber crops mineral fibers for high quality filters dissolving pulp and mercerised pulp are used. Very often users will fold the paper cone with the same 60 angle. Folding a piece of filter paper for insertion into a conical filter consists of a simple set of steps shown here in the six photographs below. Then it is folded again and creased to produce a quarter circle.

Open the filter paper as shown on the right and place it in the funnel. Folding a filter paper cone so that it beds well down into the funnel creating a good seal when wet makes for an efficient filtration step. Fold it in half as shown on the right.
